[SCIENCE MONDAY] - Polysaccharides with anticoagulant activity extracted from Mediterranean Sea sponges: a potential alternative to heparin and its derivatives 11 May 2026 Porifera harbor an evolutionarily conserved family of bioactive molecules with a remarkable ability to modulate hemostasis. Combined with the feasibility of rearing these organisms in an environmentally sustainable manner, fully aligned with blue economy principles, our findings identify these acidic polysaccharides as strong candidates for next-generation anticoagulant therapeutics, with potential extending to regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
