This study analysed the largest D-loop dataset of Griffon Vultures, finding 14 new mitochondrial haplotypes and key regional clusters in Europe and Near East. It detected unique populations in Spain, Serbia, Israel, Croatia, and Sardinia that need targeted conservation efforts. It also warns that using non-genotyped Spanish birds for restocking risks spreading hybrid genetics into new areas. Having the above in mind, should we pause cross-border restocking until genetic testing is mandatory?
